Those of you who know of Jackson Galaxy “The Cat Daddy” have probably heard the word “Catification” before. Together with Cat Style Expert, Kate Benjamin they have written the book “Catification: Designing a Happy and Stylish Home for Your Cat (and You!).” The title of the book pretty much sums up what this section is about.
“The domestic cat is an animal at it’s best in a territory rich in suitable prey and challenging landscape, and there is no denying that it’s not always possible to offer the perfect home for a pet cat” – Vicky Halls
The quote comes from one of our favourite cat behaviourists, Vicky Halls, from her book Cat Confidential in a chapter about keeping cats indoors. We are aware that our apartment is not the perfect home for our cats, but even so, it is our duty as a cat owners to make sure we keep our cats happy and healthy, with a stimulating environment.
Since the girls moved in with us, our apartment have gone from a fairly stylish (highly personal opinion) 2 room apartment, to a cat paradise in progress. Still stylish? Well, we have tried our best, but we still have a long way to go. Our main focus have been to provide a stimulating environment for the cats, but at the same time to buy and DIY cat products which fit into the rest of the interior (except for the massive cat wheel). Living with two Bengals, we have had to make the best use of the space to create a as “challenging landscape” as possible to challenge their natural behaviours like climbing, exploring, hunting and hiding.
The good thing is there is a lot of inspiration out there and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to create a cat friendly home. We hope that Kitty Matters can give you some inspiration and we will also write some future blog posts about Catification.
